Reflexology is a natural healing art based on the reflexes in the feet, which correspond to every part, gland, and organ of the body. Through the application of pressure on these reflexes, research shows that reflexology may help cancer patients improve the physical and emotional symptoms of the cancer experience.
From chemotherapy, symptom management, post-operative to palliative care, research demonstrates reflexology’s effectiveness at alleviating pain, relieving anxiety, easing nausea and more for cancer patients.
What to expect with reflexology
During a treatment, patients often fall asleep or at the very least, move into a deep state of relaxation. Treatments vary from 30 minutes to 90 minutes and during this time, the body is given the chance to restore, repair and heal.
Treatments include a review of the patient’s health history and an assessment of the feet while the patient is lying on a massage table. During the treatment, the patient may feel or notice sensitive or tender areas on the feet, as they are touched. Some people report tingling sensations in other areas of the body while the reflex points are being worked on.
